I’m sure my regular readers are well aware by now that I’m not a fan of “diets” in the traditional sense of the word.

By this I mean a particular type of eating plan that you follow for a set amount of days in order to lose weight.

Additionally, when I come across a diet program that alleges you can lose a certain amount of weight within a specific period of time, well let’s just say this typically signals a red flag to me.

So, at initial glance the Lean in 19 program definitely had me riled up.

The program creator claims that by using a “weird metabolic trick” you could see a flat and firm belly in just 19 days.

Furthermore, the program is apparently the “biggest exercise and diet breakthrough for men and women aged over 30”.

Well, this certainly piqued my interest, so I had to investigate further and provide you with my Lean in 19 review.

What is Lean in 19?

Lean in 19 is a program that combines a very specific diet plan and bodyweight workout protocol in order to accelerate the metabolism.

As the name suggests, the program should be followed for 19 days and it is claimed that you could lose up to 17lbs in this time.

Lean in 19 comes with a vast array of material, including 19 follow-along workout videos, 19-day blueprint for rapid fat loss, daily reminders, daily log sheets, step-by-step checklists, guides on emotional eating, exercise sequence, and a whole host more.


Who is The Face Behind Lean in 19?

Gavin Walsh is the creator of Lean in 19.Gavin Walsh

Gavin is a personal trainer and has over a decade of experience in the fitness industry.

He has a degree in Sports Science, as well as personal training certificates for kettlebell training and Olympic lifting.

Gavin is well-known through his online channels including, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

He has also been featured in Cosmopolitan, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health, and Women’s Health.

Gavin came up with the idea of Lean in 19 as a way to help his sister lose weight and flatten her belly.

After successfully achieving this he tried the same techniques on a small beta group of both men and women.

How Does Lean in 19 Work?

Lean in 19 is based on what Gavin describes as fixing a “Broken Metabolism” and helping people to switch on their “Metabolic Hot Zone”.

The program is specifically aimed at men and women aged over 30, as this is typically when the metabolism starts to slow down, which of course can lead to weight gain.

However, Lean in 19 is actually suitable for anyone of any age, who wishes to lose weight and flatten their belly.

Gavin looks to debunk a number of “Myths” or “Lies” around toning and tightening your belly permanently.

Firstly, he looks to prove that health professionals are way off the mark by stating that losing 1-2 pounds a week is good progress.

Lean in 19 provides a rapid weight loss plan that could see people lose 4-8 lbs a week (of course depending on their starting weight).

Next Gavin will show you why traditional moderate-intensity, steady-state cardio, e.g. jogging, cardio machines, etc. will NOT help to speed up the metabolism and burn as much fat as possible.

Then Gavin explains how using much shorter and intense workouts will actually help to fire up the metabolism and burn fat a lot quicker.

Finally, Gavin demonstrates how there’s no need to ditch your favourite foods, such as pizza, ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc. and you can still eat these without guilt while your metabolism is firing on all cylinders.

Lean in 19 initially focuses on the diet you will need to follow for 19 days.

This is a 5-day cycle that will include intermittent fasting, carb-cycling, and cheat day.

The same cycle will be repeated 4 times in total.

Intermittent fasting is typically about fasting/not eating (obviously) for a set period of time.

Many intermittent fasting diets will have you fast for around 12-24 hours, although Gavin suggests a maximum of 18 hours within any one 24-hour period (and usually less).

This simply means that on certain days you will eat all of your food within a 6-hour period and then fast for the remaining 18 hours in the day (8 of these hours will also include sleep).

Carb-cycling will involve having certain days when you eat a higher number of carbs followed by a day when you eat a much lower number of carbs.

And finally you get one cheat day within each cycle, which means that you actually get 3 cheat days in total during the 19-day plan.

A cheat day is exactly what it sounds like – you can eat whatever you want, no guilt and no rules.

Gavin claims that by following this 5-day cycle you can actually boost your metabolism by the varied forms of eating/dieting, and it is the metabolism which is responsible for helping you lose weight and burn belly and body fat.

Intermittent fasting has actually been proven to help regulate certain hormones, such as insulin and the growth hormone.

This is essential when it comes to speeding up the metabolism, losing weight, and burning body fat.

Additionally, carb-cycling is a good way to ensure that on the days when you are extremely active you consume additional carbs for energy (in order to fuel your higher levels of activity).

This means that on days when you aren’t so active you consume fewer carbs, so that the body uses fat for energy instead.

Lean in 19 will provide you with a massive list of foods which cover each macronutrient, namely protein, carbs, and fats.

There is an emphasis on whole, natural, unprocessed foods, which will help you to lose weight and lower body fat.

The proteins you will be eating are various types of meat, fish, poultry, and of course eggs.

The carbs section focuses more on vegetables, so you will be avoiding rice, pasta, cereals, and potatoes (sweet potatoes are on the list though).

And the fats are mainly different types of cooking oils and cooking fats, as well as plenty of nuts and seeds.

However, do remember that you have 3 cheat days within the Lean in 19 program when anything goes.

The next major focus of Lean in 19 is the workout program.

These are all bodyweight workouts targeting many familiar exercises, including squats, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, burpees, planks, push ups, and a whole host more.

The workouts are performed in circuit-fashion, typically with 10 seconds rest between each exercise.

The majority of the workouts only take 20 minutes, although the shortest workout is just 5 minutes, whereas the longest is 30 minutes.

The workouts are pretty extreme, but they can be modified to suit a wide range of fitness levels and starting points.

So, even if you are a complete novice there are still workouts suited to you.

The aim here is to perform certain workouts based on how you are eating on that particular day.

Therefore, some days you may only be performing 2 circuits in total, whereas you may be completing as many as 5 circuits on other days.

This means that on intermittent fasting days, many of the workouts will only be 5-10 minutes long, as this is all that is required due to the lower calories consumed and your energy resources.

The workouts on a low-carb days during the carb-cycling stage of the each 5-day cycle will only be slightly longer and a little more intense.

Therefore, the longest and most punishing workouts (but still only 20-30 minutes maximum) will be performed on your high-carb and cheat days.

The workouts also work on the principle of EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), also known as the afterburn effect.

This is something I have discussed in many articles and it is definitely the best way to exercise if you are looking to lose weight or burn body fat.

Basically, the short and intense workouts will fire up the metabolism so that the body is still burning calories/body fat for many hours after you’ve finished exercising.

In fact, depending on how intense the workout is you could experience the “afterburn effect” for 24-72 hours afterwards.

A word of warning though, the main workouts in the Lean in 19 program without any modifications are tough, even if they are just bodyweight exercises.

The combination of the various workouts and eating protocols is intended to boost your metabolic rate, so you are literally burning calories non-stop throughout the entire 19 days.

The workouts coupled with the intermittent fasting and carb-cycling days is what will actually flatten your belly.

Obviously, this does depend on your starting point, but you should notice a considerable difference in belly tone and firmness within 19 days.

What Did I Think of Lean in 19?

I must admit that Lean in 19 had me in somewhat of a quandary, as I really wasn’t sure how to react to the material within the program.

Firstly, I should probably point out that I have given Lean in 19 a rating of 6.5 out of 10.

However, me rating a “diet” program 6.5 is actually the equivalent of 9.5 out of 10, LOL.

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I’m not a fan of diets and diet programs, as they typically involve you completely changing your eating habits for a specified period of time.

So, anything with the word “diet” associated with it loses one mark immediately (remember this is of course just MY opinion and nothing more).

Now looking at the information that Gavin has provided about the metabolism, various forms of exercise, weight loss protocols, and cheat days, I am in complete agreement with him.

This for me was a huge plus point, as it proves that Gavin does know what he’s talking about.

I can even get on board with carb-cycling and cheat days, as this is typically how I eat anyway, but with far fewer restrictions than you’ll find inside the Lean in 19 program.

This is my main bug-bear with diets – restrictions.

Most diets will typically restrict certain foods, and even on occasions, entire food groups.

In the modern-day-and-age it is unfortunately carbs that are getting a bad rap.

With that said, Gavin has included a fair amount of carbs within the food lists that he has provided, so there is certainly a lot of room for manoeuvre.

As for intermittent fasting, I’ve never been entirely sure whether it’s a good thing or not, but I know it can certainly have an effect on the metabolism (good and bad depending on how you approach it).

And in truth, as Gavin has quite rightly pointed out in Lean in 19, it is the metabolism that is the major factor in whether you lose weight and burn body fat.

Nevertheless, I actually follow intermittent fasting without actually realising it, labeling it, or following any type of strict protocol.

Just to say that I have my first meal of the day at around 9am and my last meal of the day at 6.30pm, and I very rarely snack outside of these hours.

So, in effect I am going 14.5 hours a day without consuming anything (except my morning coffee and water).

Therefore, you could say I am also intermittent fasting, as I go at least 12 hours every single day without eating anything (but I’m guessing many people do this anyway, don’t they?)

As for the exercise protocol and Gavin’s ideas around long bouts of cardio, once again I completely agree with the concepts he has mentioned.

I know for a fact that the workouts you will discover inside Lean in 19 will definitely fire up the metabolism and have far more of a fat-burning effect than regular cardio.

In fact, some workouts were really intense and tough and you’ll definitely feel you deserve a cheat day afterwards.

Talking of cheat days, something else that I adhere to, and I think it is a must for most people who are looking to lose weight.

Following any type of diet can often be soul-destroying and it is often the mind that gives up first.

This is very true of the starvation diets that many people seem to focus on (which absolutely kill the metabolism by the way, thus making it near impossible to lose weight).

What I also liked about Lean in 19 is that Gavin doesn’t just leave you at the 19-day mark and he also provides a maintenance protocol which covers the next 4 weeks after you have completed the program.

You will return to a more normal way of eating, but still with certain restrictions, and far more moderate workouts.

Then if you have additional weight or fat to lose, you go through the 19-day program again after this 4-week period.

So, all-in-all, even though this is a “diet” I actually find it perfectly acceptable.

Lean in 19 has been around for a few years now, and I do know that when it was first released it retailed for $47.

Therefore, being able to purchase the entire program plus all the bonuses for just $9 is an absolute steal as far as I’m concerned.

However, when a program is priced as low as this you will usually be greeted with many upsells once you have completed your purchase, and Lean in 19 is no different.

This basically means you will be offered additional programs and products after the purchase, but it is of course your decision as to whether you buy any of these or not.

I’m also not a great fan of the sales page (but you’ll soon learn that I never am).

There’s just a lot of use of “buzzwords”, and I’m not sure whether these are intended to impress or fool the reader.

There’s talk of “Metabolic Hot Zones” and “Belly Shrinking Formulas” and “Hot Zone Hormones” and “The Hot Zone Formula” (the final one has actually been trademarked by Gavin).

Yeah whatever, get to the point.

There’s also the old “you’re getting a great deal” trick on the sales page.

You’ll note that $97 has been crossed out and that “Today’s Price” is just $9.

Eerm, the program has never been $97.

It was $47 at one time, but it has definitely been $9 for a long while now.

These are just marketing tactics, but they shouldn’t deter from the fact that Lean in 19 is a very good program.

As for whether you’ll lose 17lbs in 19 days – probably very likely if you have at least 60lbs+ to lose to reach your ideal weight.

If you have 20lbs or below to reach your ideal weight, I can’t see it happening, but you’ll still lose a fair amount of weight by following the program.

However, with all that said, I actually quite like Lean in 19, and for just $9 and a 60-day money back guarantee you can’t really go wrong as far as I’m concerned.

    This is such an interesting review. I have never really took part in a diet programme before. My brother and my sister in law did the 5:2 diet years ago and my Mum has took part in the slim-fast thing. But I haven’t, and looking at your review of Lean in 19, it does actually sound good. A 6.5/10 or really a 9.5/10 🙂 is such a good score for any kind of review. It doesn’t seem to be too expensive either.

    This could really help us as during this lockdown period I have put on a bit more weight than I would have liked and maybe this could be the answer, just before Christmas aswell.

      I’m sure by now that you’re already aware that I’m not a fan of diets, but I do understand why many people turn to them.

      For me, it should always be about eating sensibly the majority of the time and hen having an occasional cheat meal or entire cheat day, which is more about your sanity than anything else, LOL. In fact, the 5:2 diet is fairly similar to this way of eating.

      As for the Lean in 19 program, I was actually surprised by what I found inside, and in truth much of what Gavin talks about inside the program does make a lot of sense, and is pretty much inline with how I feel about exercise and nutrition.

      So, yes a 6.5 out of 10 for a diet program from me actually means a much higher mark, LOL.
